According the results of the 2022 census, Germany had 82.711 million inhabitants. This is 1.37 million fewer than previously estimated. 18.8% of the population was born in a foreign country and 13.2% has a foreign citizenship.

In 2021, Eisenach city was subordinated to Wartburgkreis. Obernau commune was incorporated by Neitersen commune, Wolferschwenda and Großenehrich by Greußen as well as Schöneberg by Schwedt city. Hahausen, Lutter am Barenberge and Wallmoden commune fused with Langelsheim city.

For the first time since the 2011 census, the total population decreased within a year: at the end of 2020, Germany had 83.155 million inhabitants (-11,680). Seven federal states also recorded a decline in population, while the population grew in 9 states.

There were only three mergers of communes in 2020: Walsrode fused with Bomlitz, Bad Salzungen absorbed Moorgrund, Oberweser and Wahlsburg formed the new commune Wesertal. Several communes in Saxony and Brandenburg got a Sorbian name in addition. Leingarten received city status. Bischofsheim is now located in the Rhön.

The boundaries of communes were updated to 31 December 2019. Their number has been reduced by 215, especially in Thuringia, where the boundaries of six counties were affected, too.
