The 2021 definition of urban centers was published in 2024. 6.82 million people live in 25 centers with more than 100,000 inhabitants. 5.15 million people reside in 147 centers with between 15,000 and 100,000 inhabitants. 4.22 million people live in 2133 centers with less than 15,000 inhabitants.

On 1 January 2023, Voorne aan Zee municipality was created by a merger of Brielle, Hellevoetsluis and Westvoorne.

On 1 January 2022, Land van Cuijk municipality was created by a merger of Boxmeer, Cuijk, Grave, Mill en Sint Hubert and Sint Anthonis. On the same day, Uden and Landerd fused to Maashorst, Heerhugowaard and Langedijk to Dijk en Waard and Beemster was incorporated into Purmerend. On 24 March 2022, Weesp will be amalgamated into Amsterdam.

On 1 January 2021, Eemsdelta municipality was created by a merger of Delfzijl, Appingedam and Loppersum. On the same day, Haaren municipality was dissolved and divided among Boxtel, Oisterwijk, Tilburg, and Vught.

Several urbans centers show a significant population growth from 2011 to 2018: IJburg-Zuidoost by 31%, Pijnacker by 20% and Zwolle-Stadshagen by 19%.

The number of municipalities is fallen from 380 in 2018 to 355 in 2019. Two former municipalities moved from South Holland to Utrecht province.
