The end-of-2022 population of China is estimated as 1411.75 million; a decrease of 850 thousand inhabitants compared to 2021. This is the first decline since 1961. The urban population increased by 6.46 million to 920.71 million. The urbanization rate reached 65.22%.

According to the preliminary results of the 2020 census, Mainland China has a total population of 1.412 billion. This corresponds to an increase by 72.05 million (5.38%) within the last decade. 902 million persons (63.9%) live in urban areas. The share of urban population grew by 14.2 percentage points.
