In 2023, two new communes (Damphreux-Lugnez and Herznach-Ueken) were created by merging two units each. In additon, Andelfingen, Les Breuleux, Menziken, Münchenbuchsee and Neckertal absorbed smaller communes.

In 2022, five new communes (Blonay - Saint-Légier, Böztal, Schwende-Rüte, Val Mara and Zurzach) were created by merging smaller units. Murten and Oron absorbed further communes. Overall, this affected the boundaries of four districts and two cantons (Bern and Fribourg).

In 2021, Bois-d'Amont, Hautemorges, Muntogna da Schons, Noble-Contrée, Tresa, Val de Bagnes and Welschenrohr-Gänsbrunnen commune were created by mergers. Several other municipalities were absorbed by existing communes. For example, the population of Neuchâtel grew by 33%.

In 2020, the municipalities Thurnen (in Bern canton), Villaz, Prez (both in Fribourg canton) and Verzasca (in Ticino) were created by mergers. Two municipalities lost areas to Verzasca. Five municipalities were absorbed by other municipalities.

Following mergers happened in 2019: Oberstammheim, Unterstammheim and Waltalingen formed Stammheim commune; Wädenswil incorporated Hütten and Schönenberg; Hinterrhein, Nufenen and Splügen fused to Rheinwald commune; Attelwil is now part of Reitnau; Rebeuvelier and Vellerat were absorbed by Courrendlin; Golaten (formerly in Bern-Mittelland) belongs now as part of Kallnach to Verwaltungskreis Seeland.

The preliminary end-of-2018 population of Switzerland reached 8.542 million and 11 mergers reduced the number of communes to 2,222. The districts of Neuchâtel canton were eliminated on 1 January 2018.
