In 2022, three new regions are created: Abai (split off from East Kazakhstan), Jetisu (from Almaty region), and Ulytau (from Karaganda region). Furthermore, one district-level city (Qosshy) and three new districts were formed: Aqsýat, Samar and Sauran.

The capital city Nur-Sultan received its previous name Astana (Астана) on 17 September 2022.

According to the first results of the 2021 census, Kazakhstan has a total population of 19,169,550. 48.71% of the population are women, 33.97% are younger than 18.

Two renamings of cities: The new name of Zatobol is Tobyl (Тобыл) and Zyrjanovsk was renamed as Altaı (Алтай).

South Kazakhstan region was split into Túrkistan region and Shymkent city. Shymkent city consists of 4 districts, two districts were added to Túrkistan, one to Almaty region and one to Nur-Sultan city.

The capital city Astana was renamed Nur-Sultan (Нұр-Сұлтан) on 23 March 2019.
