According to the 2022 definition, 5 settlements were fused with other settlements, 8 settlements fell under the population threshold, 2 settlements (Karvoskylä-Jokikylä and Metsäkylä) were seperated from existing settlements, 3 settlements (Kaukas, Sattanen and Veikars) were relisted and one place (Kytäjärvi / Kytäjä) was listed for the first time.

According to the 2021 definition, eight settlements were absorbed, e.g., Klaukkala and Söderkulla by Helsinki urban area. Sundom-Sulva settlement was split into two settlements. Evitskog and Niittylahti are listed for the first time.

According to the 2020 definition of settlements, Klaukkala was separated from Helsinki urban area and Vihtavuori from Laukaa. Ruutana settlement was absorbed by Tampere urban area, Parola by Hämeenlinna and Suolahti by Äänekoski.

On January 2021, Honkajoki municipality was absorbed by Kankaanpää. Furthermore, five municipalities changed the region: Heinävesi moved to Pohjois-Karjala, Iitti to Päijät-Häme, Isokyrö to Etelä-Pohjanmaa, Joroinen to Pohjois-Savo, and Kuhmoinen to Pirkanmaa.

According to the 2019 definition of urban settlements, three places are listed for the first time (Lemströms kanal, Niemelä-Petäjäaho and Pieni-Hirvanen), four settlements are re-entries, six settlements are absorbed by other urban areas, and nine places fulfill the criteria for urban settlements no longer.

The North Karelian municipality of Valtimo was merged with Nurmes municipality.

According to the 2018 definition of settlements, Koskö was separated from Vaasa. There are six mergers: Lapijoki joined Eurajoki, Reijola joined Joensuu, Visulahti joined Mikkeli, Karvoskylä-Jokikylä joined Oksava, Harviala joined Hämeenlinna and Puuppola joined Jyväskylä. 8 settlements dropped under the threshold of 200 inhabitants.
